Patient FAQs

What is a vascular ultrasound exam?

An ultrasound exam is a medical imaging technique that uses soundwaves to produce images of what is happening inside the body. Vascular ultrasound exams look at the vascular, or circulatory, system to examine blood flow within the veins and arteries.

Are ultrasound exams safe?

Yes, ultrasound exams are safe and noninvasive with no known side effects.

Why do I need a vascular ultrasound exam?

Your doctor has referred you to Mint Medical for a vascular ultrasound exam based on certain indications or symptoms that may affect your vascular system. Please consult with your doctor to learn more.

Who performs the ultrasound exam?

All exams at Mint Medical are performed by Registered Vascular Technologists (RVTs) who have undergone extensive training to provide high quality patient care.

What does the ultrasound exam process look like?

During your ultrasound exam, the Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) will use a handheld device called a transducer to view different veins and arteries within the body. The RVT will apply a gel to the transducer which is then placed against the skin of the area being imaged. Through compressions, the RVT can find specific veins and arteries of interest and view them on their screen. The results of your exam will be reviewed by an interpreting physician and sent to your referring doctor for final diagnosis.

How long do ultrasound exams take?

Vascular ultrasound exams typically take one hour to complete.
